Day 16: something that represents your favourite song. Anything that makes me happy and dance-y is good with me.
I will be making this into a nice print soon.

Crochet Coral Reef →

This is the website for the Crochet Coral Reef project. The idea is to create a satellite coral reef that travels from place to place, growing as it does through contribution from local people. There are no exhibitions of the work at the moment, though I am going to continue to search, however, there is still open contributions.

The crocheted corals are created using a very specific technique, using the hyperbolic pattern, waves, that coral in the wild grows in. There is a book named ‘A Field Guide to Hyperbolic Space: An Exploration of the Intersection of Higher Geometry and Feminine Handicraft’. The project resides in the intersections of mathematics, marine biology, handicraft, community art practice, and responds to the environmental crisis of global warming.

I love this concept. The 3-D nature of it, and the use of making something so simple and craft-y into something poignant, environmental, scientific and mathematical. This holds resonance to a project I did earlier in the year, where I used knitting to replicate the geometric build-up of scientific fractals. I really like this concept and execution and think, although the matter is slightly off topic, that this could hold significance for where I take this later down the line.

Anyone who says they had an easy puberty is a liar.

Puberty Penelope- by Holly O’Neil.

This was a project I made for a brief entitled ‘Make Change’. The idea was to help young girls through puberty. The doll goes through puberty when th child does, and her colourful appearance and easy-to-use ‘parts’ make her child friendly.

She includes:

  • stick-on sweat patches
  • pubic hair
  • 2 bras with varying breast size
  • a pair of panties with a stick-in sanitary pad
  • adjustable hips
  • small accessories including dry shampoo, deodorant and a set of pads for her human companion
